á     Implementing and running the PELICAN programme, a pre-school provision for children with social communication difficulties.

Key achievements

 

á       Developed, implemented and ran the pre-school service for children with social communication impairments, using a unique model which, through evaluation, has proved to be very effective and is highly valued by the Local Authority.

á       Led the development of services for pupils with social communication disorders in the Local Authority, chairing a new multi-agency group which evaluated current provision and promoted new initiatives including the setting up of resourced mainstream provision.

á       Was a founder member of the Portsmouth Autism Assessment Service, a diagnostic service, led by a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, working with children and their families

á       Worked with the Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and the Clinical Psychologist fromn the Assessment Service to develop and provide training sessions for professionals and parents from the Portsmouth area on Autism Awareness

á       Worked as the Education representative in a working group establishing new services for pupils displaying sexually problematic behaviour in Portsmouth schools

á      Worked with a Specialist Advisory Teacher setting up and running a programme to develop Emotional Literacy skills in pupils at Key Stages 1 and 2. This programme, using adapted PAThS       materials, with permission of the authors, Greenberg and Kusche, commenced in 1998, wellbefore the Government SEAL initiatives, and evaluations indicated extremely positive impacts

á       Worked with a Specialist Teacher Adviser to develop training programmes for non-teaching staff working with hearing impaired pupils. This was a four day programme aimed at developing skills and understanding with opportunities to practice skills between sessions

á       Was a member of a multi-agency team evaluating services for pupils with hearing impairments in the Local Authority

á       Provided training on Positive Behaviour Management strategies for staff using the model of LaVigna and Willis and including Physical Intervention skills based on those of SCIP, Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention
